Drawn Arc Process (ARC)

Large studs and high-quality welds,

that is what makes drawn arc processes so convincing

  1. Range of application:
  •  The drawn arc process is suitable for studs from 2 mm up to 25 mm.
  •  A wide variety of stud shapes can be welded.
  • In particular, threaded studs, pins, insulation pins, bayonet pins, internally threaded bushes, concrete anchors and flat anchors made of St37, 15Mo3, 1.4301, 1.4713/42/62 and 1.4841 are possible.
  1. Process types:

Drawn arc stud welding is divided into 3 main processes: short-cycle stud welding, drawn arc stud welding with ceramic ferrule and drawn arc stud welding with shielding gas. The 3 processes are explained in more detail below, along with their application strengths and technical details.

Application strengths
  • Very high process reliability
  • Well suited for poor surfaces
  • Easy to automate
  • Drawn arc welding of thin sheet
  • Required for drawn arc studs with d > 5 mm and longer welding times to stabilise the weld pool
  • The ceramic ferrule has a beneficial effect on the weld microstructure
  • Use with large studs
  • Produces significantly higher-quality welds
  • Prevents porosity
  • Focuses the energy at the weld point
  • Easy to automate (for large studs using the pick-up process)
Good to know
  • Deeper penetration than tip ignition = higher likelihood of marks and temper colours on the reverse side
  • Higher weld build-up can sometimes make assembly more difficult
  • Limited suitability for automation
  • Requires ceramic ferrules
  • Ceramic ferrules must be fitted individually
  • Ceramic ferrules cannot be fed automatically
  • Very deep penetration
  • Requires shielding gas function on the unit
  • Produces very high-quality and visually appealing welds
  • More sensitive to arc blow at workpiece edges and with asymmetrical earth points
Values may vary depending on equipment and application
